Reports To: SVP, Chief Accounting OfficerRole Summary
Consults on complex strategies and influences decisions that benefit long-term financial results and protection of capital. Responsible for production, reporting, analysis and internal controls associated with GAAP and Statutory records for 100 billion-dollar investment portfolio. Monitors risks, assesses impacts and ensures compliance with evolving regulations and accounting standards resulting from increased pressures in the regulatory environment. Ensures investments are valued in a controlled manner and impairments are recorded in accordance with GAAP, Statutory and Tax guidelines. Liaison to KPMG, federal and state regulators and standard setters for investment activities and transactions. Sets strategy for Investment Controllership operations and guides interactions with clients, regulators and support functions. Influences cross functional Controllership strategy and executes initiatives impacting associates across Controllership.
Key Responsibilities
GAAP/Statutory/Regulatory Reporting - Oversees all external financial reporting related to investments, including SEC product filings, Federal Reserve reporting and numerous Statutory reports. Leads the efforts to accumulate and analyze the data that drives the investments results and ensures that the system infrastructure is in place to support the operations. Prepares and presents financial presentations to senior management on a recurring basis. Coordinates audit work with external auditors, internal auditors and regulators to ensure completion is timely and in compliance with requirements.
Advisory Support - Influences business decisions and advocates for positions that benefit long-term financial results and protects capital. Key advisor during the assessment of new alternative investment strategies including private equity funds, hedge funds, emerging market funds and other exotic investment vehicles. Presents to executive stakeholders on new strategies and related risks as required. Member of the Investment IT Advisory Council.
Strategic Direction and Execution - Sets and directs strategy and direction for Investment Controllership teams and their interactions with related support functions. Influences the cross functional Controllership strategy and executes initiatives that impact associates across the collective Controllership areas.
Accountable for Valuation and Significant Judgment Activities - Member of Investment Pricing Committee providing enterprise level oversight and governance to the valuation process, approving proposed selection of pricing sources and assisting in the governing of the overall investments pricing process.
Accounting Policy and Research - in coordination with matrix responsibilities, oversight regarding accounting policy and research function including the establishment and implementation of new policies based on new technical accounting literature and new transactions for investments. Serves as the outward facing leader, representing Nationwide, at industry trade groups and with regulatory authorities.
Internal Controls - Oversee the development and maintenance of 22 Financial Reporting controls for Investment Controllership. Oversees 5 systems, 125 IT job streams, 700 investment accounts and a Datamart. Informs the CAO and CFO's and other interested parties of important developments and decisions.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education/Certification/Licenses: Undergraduate business degree - Accounting/Finance, CPA
Experience/Skills: Experience leading mid to large teams of accounting and finance professionals at large insurance/financial services companies. Experience interacting with Board of Directors, Senior Management, auditors and regulators for large insurance/finance services enterprises. Auditing of insurance/financial services entities preferred. Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible financial management experience within an insurance/financial services company, preferably with investment experience. Strong analytical skills, problem solving, technical accounting skills, ability to communicate with wide range of audiences, leadership and motivational skills, and decision-making.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence. Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Some travel may be required.
