- The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine. Our Laboratory Medicine department has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time (100%), evening shift, CLINICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN LEAD. Under limited supervision, the Clinical Laboratory Technician Lead will provide laboratory support in the Microbiology Laboratory, located at Harborview Medical Center. The Clinical Laboratory Technician Lead will regularly assign, instruct, lead, and check the work of others; perform the work of Clinical Laboratory Technicians (CLT); may contribute to the development and evaluation of new laboratory processes and procedures; perform, at a technical level, various routine laboratory procedures; and other laboratory work which supports the operation of a clinical microbiology laboratory.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- In conjunction with the Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) scheduler, organize CLT staff work assignments and daily schedule to support departmental needs; redirect staff efforts on an ongoing basis as required to maintain a smooth workload
- Participate in new employee selection, orientation, and training; participate in orientation and training of all CLT staff on new and revised P&P; insure completion and documentation of checklist items and other associated paperwork
- Contribute and help develop new laboratory processes and procedures
- Act as a resource by providing leadership in handling daily tasks and troubleshooting problems to include equipment/instrument/computer issues, communication with clinical and non-clinical staff, and personnel conflicts
- Keep staff informed regarding technical and non-technical issues; maintain confidentiality when required, to include staffing and personnel issues; generate and review quality feedback forms with staff; provide input to the manager regarding employee performance
- Insure QC/ QA activities are performed and documented according to SOP; provide feedback to staff when SOP has not been followed; refer problems to the appropriate person when necessary
- Assist with inventory and maintaining adequate stock; may order supplies
- Evaluate, describe, inoculate, and process laboratory specimens, such as blood, stool, sputum, urine, tissue, and fluid. Insure the accuracy of policies and procedures associated with the collection and processing of specimens submitted to Microbiology; communicate to the appropriate personnel when inaccuracies are found in policies and procedures and follow- up to insure correction of information
- Read and report Gram stain smears; troubleshoot unusual or questionable results; serve as a resource for yearly Gram stain competency testing
- Perform all CLT2 and CLT1 tasks
- Perform other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:
An Associate Degree from a Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program including courses in chemistry and biology
AND
One year of Clinical Laboratory Technician experience
OR
equivalent education/experience.CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Employees working in Laboratory Medicine: - May be required to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, including but not limited to UWMC, HMC, CHRMC, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, SCCA, Roosevelt, etc.
- May be required to work weekends and holidays
- Are considered essential staff and required to report to work in inclement weather
