Job Description

The Student Life Coordinator facilitates the social, academic, and personal adjustment of undergraduate students participating in academic programs at the MBL . The Student Life Coordinator will fulfill a wide range of roles, working as a mentor, counselor, administrator, disciplinarian, activities advisor and general resource person.

Additional Information:
MAJOR DUTIES :
1. Pre-Program Responsibilities:
a. Partner with incoming instructors to assess needs of incoming students before they arrive on campus

b. Collect all necessary medical and emergency information

c. Coordinate any special accommodations

d. Provide means to access supplies not available locally on the MBL campus or in the neighboring community

2. Serve as point person for undergraduate students on campus:

a. Provide orientation session upon arrival on campus

b. Be easily accessible to address student needs as they arise

3. Develop and implement plan to handle medical and mental health emergencies on campus

a. Define 24 hour written plan for medical or mental health emergencies

b. Provide training to stakeholders in undergraduate programs (Security, Housing, RA’s)

c. Establish relationship with local healthcare providers who can evaluate students in distress

4. Handle any disciplinary situations that arise:
a. In cooperation with the Director, Human Resources, and the appropriate resources at the student’s home institution, the Student Life Coordinator will handle any disciplinary issues that arise

b. Maintain consistency and fairness when dealing with all students, document all incidents

c. Will enforce rules consistently and, when appropriate, impose disciplinary sanctions upon students or refer disciplinary cases to the appropriate resource.

5. Student Life:
a. Create a program of extracurricular activities to engage students on weekends or during extended stays

b. Provide a variety of options/activities to be covered by the specific program

c. Provide low-cost dorm programming (lectures, movie nights, sports, etc.)

6. Establish relationships and lines of communications with students’ home institutions.

7. Manage all program Resident Assistants

Basic Qualifications:
SKILLS REQUIRED :

  • Ability to work effectively within a team of course or program stakeholders, including the ability to adapt to a complex configuration of partners and stakeholders and to balance needs of different groups at various times throughout the year
  • Experience in education program design, particularly with undergraduate populations
  • Proven track record in administration, event planning and communication with diverse administrative units
  • Experience in implementing and utilizing digital innovative technologies, social media, website mechanisms
  • Experience with all Microsoft Office applications
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE :
  • Three or more years of related experience; ideally in the area of education administration
  • Bachelor’s degree in related area
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with academic research institutions is preferred
Physical Requirements:
  • The working environment for this position requires close vision for computer and administrative work
  • Work is generally performed in an office setting but also involves moving throughout the MBL , UChicago campuses, and other campuses as well as accompanying students on field trips and excursions
  • Periodic travel will be necessary between the MBL and UChicago, as well as other institutions
