We operate vocational centers and offer day programs and residential services in Fairfield, Ottumwa, Keosauqua, Knoxville, Chariton, Oskaloosa, and Centerville, Iowa.

As a Direct Support Professional (DSP), you will play a positive and vital role in helping our clients achieve their goals and gain independence. Responsibilities include providing support and assistance to people with disabilities in their home/community to develop and maintain skills for greater independence. Responsible for implementing the Individual Program Plan, documentation of program results, and good communication skills a must. We offer a variety of available shifts including daytime/evening/overnight positions.
Essential Job Functions: Direct Support Profession (DSP)
- Supervise, train, and/or assist Individuals with disabilities in all phases of daily living to explore and achieve the goals established in the Individual Program Plan (I.P.P.).
- Transport Individuals to appointments, shopping, community activities, etc. as needed.
- Complete written documentation following each service provided; including Individual’s progress on goals, activities, responses, interaction, etc.
- Remain actively involved with the Individual(s) throughout the duration of your shift.
- Provide updates on Individuals and maintain regular communication with supervisor.
- Ensure that safety standards are adhered to and proper action is taken to correct any violations.
- Be informed of and capable of handling emergencies; i.e. Individuals' behavior issues, medical emergencies, evacuations, etc.
- Assist in objectively evaluating Individuals’ skills through assessment tools.
- Successfully complete the Medication Manager course and administer medications according; reporting all passes on Medication Administration Record (MAR).
- Responsible for completing Tenco’s annual Corporate Compliance training and fulfilling all the requirements set forth by the Corporate Compliance program.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and in-services.
- Responsible to maintain the highest level of confidentiality at all times.
- Ensure that only non-aversive behavior management techniques are used as outlined in the behavior plans and report all incidents of suspected Individual’s rights violations.
- Encourage Individuals to participate in leisure activities and supervise Individuals.
- Other work related duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications/Requirements: Direct Support Professional
- High school education or equivalent; experience working with people with disabilities preferred.*
- Must have access to a telephone*
- Able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds without restrictions and pass pre-employment physical.
- Satisfactory results on background checks pertaining to criminal and abuse registries.
- Must have valid driver’s license and personal auto insurance as required by the State of Iowa, and be insurable under Tenco’s insurance.
