Global Engineering executes major CAPEX projects in the Pharmaceutical Division with focus on Pharma Technical Operations (PT). Within Global Engineering, the Principal/Sr. Principal Project Manager has overall responsibility for driving large, complex projects to successful completion. Responsible for effective project management of project phases: project initiation, conceptual design, basic design, detailed design & construction & commissioning assuring that the investment is able to achieve functional, strategic, compliance and financial goals. Requires excellent internal and external collaboration and influencing skills and the ability to lead diverse, cross-functional teams. The Principal/Sr. Principal Project reports to a regional Head of Project Delivery US. Work is self-directed. Project Sizes are typically greater than 100M CHF and typically highly complex in nature, requiring extensive cross-functional integration and complex execution strategies.

Key Responsibilities/Tasks

Accountable for leading the assigned CAPEX project(s) to achieve the project’s approved user requirements, scope, cost and schedule parameters, meeting quality expectations and right-first-time.

  • Lead project teams with engaged team members through building and leading teams, motivates and inspires the team members, setting clear expectations for team members, strong communication skills and clear decision-making.
  • Drives proactive project management including planning of design and execution as well as active change management
  • Ensure project planning and execution deliverables adheres to Engineering Manual requirements (as appropriate for project phases and as agreed by Steering Committee), for project management processes, Global Standards and Processes, and other Roche Guidelines and Directives. Ensure project execution utilizing industry and Roche’s best practices.
  • Ensure that project management tools are consistently utilized to achieve project goals and objectives and to deliver successful projects.
  • External contractors: Select contractors with appropriate skill set. Set clear expectations for work delivered and behaviors. Monitor performance and ensure contractual obligations are met.
  • Ensure deployment and management of an effective (Contractor) safety program, meeting Roche requirements and metrics/KPI’s throughout project lifecycle.
  • Ensure adherence to Roche’s Pharmaceutical Quality System (PQS).
  • Ensure adherence to local laws and applicable technical rules and regulations.
  • Ensure training of self is always current and all team members are trained as appropriate for their role.
  • Provide timely reports, resource demand and schedule updates to ensure data accuracy within Global Project Management Platform
  • Comply with Roche Quality policies, Roche Pharma Code of Conduct and all other Roche Policies and Directives.
  • Make project-related scope, cost, and schedule decisions in consultation, as appropriate, with project stakeholders and global engineering staff.
  • Informs Head of Project Delivery US and Steering Committee when critical issues arise and seeks assistance as necessary
  • Within the framework of Global Standards and Processes, effectively and constructively challenge the status quo, within and beyond Roche and Global Engineering, identifying better ways to accomplish department and program objectives.
  • Introduce innovation and best practices for Capex project management, to project team, peers and customers/stakeholders.
  • Act as an advocate for beneficial/improved new processes, procedures, technologies and techniques within and beyond Roche.
  • Lead and advocate the use of Lean Project Delivery practices construction technology to enhance value

Leading by demonstrating Roche Leadership Commitments and PT Behaviors, influences project outcomes, improves team performance, and achieves established project, Global Engineering and (specific Site location) Operations goals.

  • Proactively engage with key Project stakeholders to gain alignment amongst conflict, without damaging relationships.
  • Provide strong project team leadership and champion project team collaboration.
  • Actively engage within Project Steering Committees, to influence project planning and ensure alignment of Business Requirements and Project Engineering deliverables
  • Communicate transparently and in a concise fashion to relevant stakeholders regarding project status, plans, risks and strategy.
  • Ensure timely, transparent, complete and accurate reporting.
  • Effectively manage project changes, deploy and lead proactive measures to achieve the specified goals in the event of deviations from the project plan
  • Mentor Genentech/Roche staff on engineering principles and other areas of expertise as needed.

Proactively build trustful and effective relationships with key customers and stakeholders, and partner pro-actively to develop and execute (assigned Capex Project) to support Roche business objectives.

  • Regularly engage with key Stakeholders and Business Partners, including their leadership teams, to provide operational reviews and project status, identify risks and associated mitigation plans, highlight opportunities
  • Fully integrate personal and (assigned Capex project) team’s efforts with key Stakeholders, Business Partners and project Steering Committees to ensure effective Capital Project delivery that meets the business requirements.
  • Proactively partner with the Owner Representative, assigned clients and stakeholders (Biologics, Supply Planning, Product Teams, Technical Transfers) to execute (assigned capital project) that support business objectives.
  • Proactively partner with other Roche groups/functions within Global Engineering and with partners (Finance, Procurement, Informatics, EH&S, Planning, Legal, etc.) to set and meet project objectives, adhere to business processes impacting program planning/ execution and to implement business process changes.
  • Provide regular, timely, transparent, complete and accurate reporting, project status updates and presentations to the Steering Committee, management and the broader organization. Exercise excellent judgment in determining appropriate project communications to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Represent Roche at industry and professional forums.

Qualifications (education/experience/knowledge/skills/competencies)

Education & Experience

  • B.S. in engineering, architectural or construction related field with a minimum of 12 years successfully managing projects in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry, with at least 10 years managing large, complex projects, preferably in an international environment.
  • Preferred Requirements: MS or PhD in Engineering and/or an MBA
  • Able to execute scope that is highly complex on projects that are mid-sized to large

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies

  • Advanced/Exceptional leadership, interpersonal, communications, negotiation, collaboration, and management skills.
  • Proven expertise in effectively applying and/or developing advanced project management tools and methodologies.
  • Develops solutions to unique problems requiring innovation and the adaptation of the latest project management techniques
  • Understands the basic principles of various engineering disciplines. Has in-depth understanding of one engineering discipline (e.g. process, utilities, etc.)
  • Understands facility end user operational needs and principals. Understands and is an advocate for End-User organizations to assure that the project meets or exceeds all compliance requirements and functional needs.
  • Special knowledge requirements include biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical processes and facility design approaches, plus solid understanding of Pharmaceutical cGMP requirements and Roche Engineering Manual project execution methodologies.
  • General knowledge requirements include general understanding of industry standards & best practices, Federal regulations (GXPs), basic construction methodology (particularly in the process, automation, and mechanical engineering disciplines, project finances and risks, and project controls systems), EH& S regulations, Quality Assurance, and IT systems.
  • Able to demonstrate understanding of global engineering’s strengths and weaknesses, and impact on other departments outside of Global Engineering.
  • Serves as a primary consultant to senior management
  • Decisions have a significant impact on the goals of the organization
  • Global experience and culturally savvy, can adapt to and effectively manage in various cultural environments and organizational levels including executive management

  • Proficient knowledge of English (written & spoken) a must, and other additional languages (e.g. German, Portuguese, Mandarin) a plus.
  • Significant travel is required to meet the business need
  • National and/or International project assignment of 1 to 3 years as required to meet the business needs

For Colorado-based applicants, the expected salary range for this position is [$157,612 – 183,881]. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits listed below.
