ASSISTANT TO BELLS FOR BOOKS COORDINATOR

SummaryThis position will assist the Bells for Books Coordinator in duties pertaining to the Bookmobile. Latitude is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides direct supervision to the Bells for Books volunteers;
  • Assists in the organization and operation of the Bells for Books program;
  • Maintains and reports Bells for Books statistics;
  • Assists with maintenance of program vehicle;
  • Assists with special events, projects and prizes;
  • Drives Bells for Books bookmobile;
  • Recommends schedule and routes for bookmobile;
  • Keeps appropriate records of registrations, circulation, volunteers and other operations relative to the Bells for Books program;
  • Checks materials in and out to patrons at designated locations on route;
  • Coordinates activities on bookmobile;
  • Stocks the bookmobile with books, supplies and other materials;
  • Fuels and keeps records of maintenance on bookmobile;
  • Posts Bells for Books information at designated locations;
  • Mends and cleans books, and other media;
  • Withdraws items beyond repair;
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Acceptable Experience and Training

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency is required and some college or business school with library or computer classes is preferred;
  • At least one (1) year of library or non-profit organization experience is preferred; and
  • At least one (1) year of experience driving a bus or truck of equivalent size preferred; and
  • Valid Idaho Driver’s License, CDL recommended; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Basic principles, objectives, methods, materials, and practices of library science as applied to a Bookmobile;
  • English grammar, spelling, and punctuation;
  • Operation of standard office equipment, a personal computer, and job-related software;
  • Operation of specialized library computer and data processing systems;
  • Current office practices and procedures;
  • Supervisory skills with volunteers
  • Library cataloging operations;

Ability to:

  • Follow written and oral instructions;
  • Provide customer service to patrons, adults and children;
  • Handle conflict resolution;
  • Establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships;
  • Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Work independently and as a team member;
  • Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;
  • Operate standard office equipment, including a personal computer and job-related applications;
  • Operate specialized library computer equipment and programs;
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Learn and apply City Library policies and procedures.

Essential Physical Abilities

  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, communicate effectively on the telephone and in person, and to hear sounds within the normal range of conversation;
  • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and sort and catalog a variety of books, written documents, and materials;
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate computer equipment and other specialized library equipment, including driving the Bells for Books mobile unit;
  • Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, stamina, and agility, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to lift and move up to 50 pounds, maneuver book carts, and to work in a library environment.
  • Jobs in this class require performing repetitive hand movement in gripping, fingering, and hand/wrist/arm movements. Related job tasks may require walking, standing, sitting, lifting, stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, crouching, pushing, grasping, and reaching.

Job Type: Part-time

Salary: $13.87 /hour
