Job Description

This position performs duties of a general laborer or those requiring basic understanding and use of tools in the maintenance, installation and general repair of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.

Scope of Job

Performs duties of a general laborer or those requiring basic understanding and use of hand tools.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides manual labor following basic routines directed by an immediate supervisor during the repair and maintenance of water or wastewater services and facilities.
  • Assists in excavation; operates air hammer to break rock and asphalt; uses pick and shovel to remove dirt and rock; uses probe to locate pipe.
  • Ensures all safety procedures are followed.
  • Reports equipment problems and needs; helps maintain tools, equipment and vehicles.
  • Loads and unloads trucks; drives dump truck as needed.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Responds regularly and promptly to work.
Minimum Education & Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Work experience performing "handyman" or general laborer duties is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to :

  • Use all hand tools related to position.
  • Follow basic routines and understand and follow specific verbal instructions.
  • Make simple mathematical calculations and use tape measure.
  • Be constantly alert and aware of the hazards involved and follow the safety practices and principles in reporting and preventing accidents.
Special Requirements, Licenses and Certifications

Texas Class C driver's license with a good driving record as measured by the City's evaluation system.

Once hired, the employee must be able to obtain a Class A commercial driver's license within timeframe set by the department.

Physical Demands

Physical demands include but are not limited to: Sitting, talking, hearing, seeing, standing, walking, driving, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending; repetitive hand and arm motion, lifting and/or moving objects up to and including 80 pounds or more.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in outside weather conditions, sometimes in extreme temperatures; works near and/or with moving mechanical parts and equipment; potential exposure to fumes or airborne particles and/or possibly toxic or caustic chemicals; risks of electrical shock; loud noises and vibration.

Equipment

Work shall be performed with tools, appliances and equipment approved by those agencies and bodies that have control, authority or approval of the design working ranges or limitations of those items; the employee has the responsibility to conform to those ranges and limitations.

Equipment may include but is not limited to: Hand tools, power tools, truck and dump truck.
