Job Summary

O verview: The staff of the Buffalo Museum of Science accomplishes its goals through the implementation of strong team processes and procedures. All staff are recruited, trained, facilitated, and developed with this in mind. While each employee has a position description and well-defined reporting responsibilities, they are required to be flexible in both. They will at times be asked to perform as part of project teams or task forces where their reporting responsibility and work requirements may be different from, while related to, their basic position description. BMS senior staff is committed to identifying, nourishing, and employing the unique strengths and interests each person brings with them to their position here.

Basic Purpose and Responsibility:

Under the guidance and supervision of the Operations Manager; Custodians will be essentially responsible for general cleaning duties of all properties operated by the Society.

Custodian Essential Functions:

  • Assist with simple repairs when needed or required
  • Dusting of all cabinetry, inside and out
  • Maintenance and waxing of floors
  • Maintenance and cleaning of all window and cabinetry glass.
  • Maintenance and cleanliness of all Society Rest Rooms
  • Assist in the re-order of daily consumables as they pertain to Operations
  • Assist in the maintenance of the Society’s grounds, such as snow removal, refuse pick-up, raking of leaves, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager.
  • Maintain at all times a friendly and outgoing disposition.

Education, Experience, Skills, and Qualities Required

  • Minimum of High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 1-year experience in custodial operations
  • An appreciation for science, nature, education, and a passion for the mission of the Society
  • A genuine care for people and the environment
  • A willingness to learn new skills
  • Basic computer skills

Physical Demand and/or other minimum requirements:

  • Must be physically fit and able-bodied.
  • Position requires lifting of heavy objects (minimum of 50 lbs), climbing stairs and ladders, walking long distances, standing for extended periods of time, etc.
  • Reading and understanding printed materials and schedules
  • Hearing and speaking with people in person and on a telephone / two-way radio routinely on a daily basis
  • Moving around and between the Society’s sites on a daily basis
  • NYS Drivers License desired but not mandatory
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and evenings as necessary.
