Nielsen Media is seeking an experienced privacy/data protection attorney to join its Legal Privacy Team on a permanent basis. The position will be located in Europe (specific location is flexible). The Privacy Counsel will work as part of a team of global privacy and data protection professionals to ensure privacy and data protection compliance at Nielsen, while enabling business innovation. The position will report to the Chief Privacy Officer.

Responsibilities include

  • Advising Nielsen Legal Department colleagues and business stakeholders about global data protection and privacy laws, regulations, and industry guidelines – with a particular focus on EU, drawing on knowledge and experience with specific industry requirements and best practices (e.g., EDAA, IAB, NAI)
  • Reviewing existing and developing products and solutions, including traditional market research panels and ad tech-related products and technologies (incl. tags, cookies, connected TV) and ensuring they comply with applicable privacy and data protection laws and industry best practices; promoting privacy by design at Nielsen
  • Identifying business risks and requirements resulting from new and evolving privacy laws and regulations
  • Reviewing data collection and use practices to ensure consistency and legal compliance; conducting privacy impact assessments
  • Drafting privacy notice/statements, and other privacy disclosures for websites, mobile apps, panels, surveys, employees, and other products and services
  • Collaborating with Legal, Security, HR/Benefits, Sourcing, and other departments on privacy-related matters
  • Reviewing, drafting and negotiating commercial contracts (with customers and vendors) that have significant privacy and data protection impact
  • Other related matters as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of global data protection laws, with a preference for a deep understanding of GDPR, and existing data protection guidelines developed by Data Protection Authorities in Germany, Italy and France; ability to research privacy laws and practices globally
  • Minimum 5 years experience as a privacy/data protection lawyer (privacy as primary area of practice) in-house with a global company or combined with time spent at a law firm
  • Resident in Europe
  • Qualified to Practice Law in one or more European jurisdiction
  • Sound judgment, excellent problem-solving skills, practicality, a focus on business outcomes, and flexibility to manage multiple matters simultaneously
  • Ability to share knowledge and best practice effectively with wider team, with a view to enable self service and quick turnaround of routine matters
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Very hands-on and practical, ready to work closely with legal team colleagues, as well as business, product, and engineering staff to get things done
  • The ability to identify, prioritize and resolve issues quickly and effectively
  • Excellent interpersonal skills (sense of humor is a big plus)

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep understanding of Internet technologies
  • Experience in market research, digital marketing, and/or ad tech industry
  • Strong commercial contract experience
  • Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) accreditation
  • Fluent in one of the following languages: French, German, Italian
